Watermark
"The ocean is a blanket, and the moon pulls its edges". The work is a reflection on a traveling body observing the water bodies, where the familiar, repetitive rhythm of the tides connects with and comforts the constant change of the landscapes. The daily drawings of marine views along the coast of The Netherlands were made with silk paint and salt from the North Sea on fine fabric. The material is cut into many identical pieces, which are then reconnected into overlapping, scattered memories, patches of moving scenes, while the moving water stays the recurrent, soothing element. A soft sculpture of silk and wood slightly changes its shape due to the air moisture in the place of the installation.
Elina Alekseeva’s practice unfolds her interest in the intimate and reciprocal connection between people and their surroundings. The recurring topic of her work is the notion of home in its most broad understanding. This interest comes from a personal history of frequent relocations, and curiosity about how an identity unfolds in the process of finding a place in the world through the actions of moving and homing. Having an interdisciplinary background (linguistics, literature and textile design), in her work she applies to material experimentation, photography and installation.
